Umoja means "Unity" in Swahili. Together, we can bring social issues alive in the classroom and community for students, while instilling a passion for active local and global citizenship.
The Simcoe County District School Board and Me to We Trips have joined forces to provide local high school students with the opportunity to travel to Africa to build rural schools, while completing two secondary school credits. The program is based at Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School and an African rural community that will be assigned at a later date. This exciting leadership and volunteer program is available to all grade 11 and 12 high school students in our school board. Students must enroll at NPSS for the second semester of the 2017-2018 school year. They will complete an interdisciplinary credit (IDC4U) which involves educating students about themes such as Millennium Development Goals, International Human Rights, health care, child labour, culture, education and Third World countries. They will also complete a senior English credit (ENG3C/3U/4C/4U) which involves studying texts relative to the humanitarian and leadership study. Students will learn through interactive lessons, social media, guest speakers, relevant readings and volunteering. |
